My name is Tonya, and I grew up on a 300-acre farm in rural Virginia that has been in my family for over 100 years. After graduating from college, receiving my master’s degree in speech and language pathology, and living and working in a small city for six years, I decided to return to the place of my childhood. Here, in this rural area, on this patch of green, where for four generations my family has farmed, gardened, and lived, I, too wanted to be a part of this continuity. As a fourth generation farmgirl, I have many interests that not only include, but also go beyond the basics of farming, gardening, sheep and chicken-keeping. It is all of this and more that I plan on sharing in this blog.

My Dear Farm Girl Tonya!
I am very much impressed by this post, the images and the words of Wordsworth.

Beautiful. Though I tend to have more of a brown thumb. (I can turn shine-ola to shit). My grandmother was a great gardener, having moved from farmland in the old country, she could plant a stick in the ground and have a rose bush grow from it.

Many thanks. You’re a hoot! I’m sure you’re a better gardener than you think. My grandfather had the same ability as your grandmother. He enjoyed starting boxwoods from tiny sprigs. I still have a a few that are thriving. 🙂

One of her skills that I wish I could have learned was her ability to go into the woods and pick mushrooms for soup. She could tell the good from the bad with ease.

That is definitely an important skill. I think it’s fun to forage for mushrooms. As a child, I’d help my dad look for morels in the woods in the springtime. Around here the colloquial name for them is wood fish.

Those pink roses on the white picket fence get me every time. So beautiful. Thanks for putting some colorful blooms in our gray and white winter 🙂 It’s a good reminder of seasons.

I can’t believe you have time to deadhead with all the other work on the farm! BUT, if you get flowers like these in your garden, I can certainly understand why you’d squeeze it in.

I’m not as consistent with deadheading as I would like. I fit it in when I can, and Farmguy helps sometimes, too. 🙂
