The Weekly Bleat: First Egg

I suppose I could’ve called this post, “The Weekly Cluck,” but I decided to stay with tradition. πŸ˜‰ Β In March of this year, nine baby chicks joined our menagerie on Green Hill Farm. Β Well, these little guys are mostly grown now, and we had our first egg last Thursday. Finding the first egg is always a thrill, but it was especially exciting as we haven’t had fresh eggs in quite a while. Β Last fall, a meandering fox found its way into our chicken pasture, aviary, and coop. Β We lost fourteen of fifteen chickens. Β Honey Hen, a chicken that doesn’t walk well or lay eggs anymore, was the only survivor. Β While we love our little Honey Hen, it’s nice once more to have chickens running around in the aviary, making their endearing little noises, and finally laying wonderful, fresh, organic eggs. Β So…..on to the star of the show! Β Here’s the most charming, petite, speckled egg……

And, here are a few photographs of the chicks—then and now.

  3. It’s awful about the fox. I know that I got attached to my hens and it was awful losing one to a fox. Your chicks are adorable. It’s amazing how fast they grow! We went from no eggs to too many eggs in a short while. Best of luck with your flock!

    • It’s true; you do get attached. You interact with them daily just like any other pet, and losing one is really awful. They definitely grow fast! I can’t believe we’re already getting eggs. We’ve only gotten a few eggs so far, but I’m looking forward to having enough to make scrambled eggs or an omelet soon. Thanks, Rob. πŸ™‚
I hope things are going well for you with work, etc. Take care! πŸ™‚
