Looking Back

You know how you hear a song, and it takes you right back to a time and place?  We’ve all experienced it.  Well, the other night, Farmguy and I were watching a film called, The Proposal, starring Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds.  There’s a funny scene where the characters sing “It Takes Two,” by Rob Base and DJ E Z Rock.  It’s a great tune that makes you want to get up and dance.  And….I did. After downloading the song, I sang and danced myself all around the kitchen while cleaning up, as Farmguy looked on—rolling his eyes once or twice for good measure.

With all of this singing and dancing as well as a high school reunion coming up this weekend, the music of Rob Base and DJ E Z Rock transported me through time and space.  I suddenly remembered being 17-years-old and starting my senior year in high school.  It was our last year together, and a friend suggested performing a dance routine to “It Takes Two” for the school talent show.  There were about six of us, led by Wendy, our good friend and intrepid dance captain.  Wendy assured us that it would be a great experience, and we’d have fun—especially, since she planned on choreographing a dance routine that would be reminiscent of the “Fly Girl” dancers from the hit television show, In Living Color.

So, after some convincing, she assembled our little group.  We met everyday after school—perfecting our moves, while listening to “It Takes Two” over and over again to a count of 5-6-7-8.  Even though it was a lot of effort, we enjoyed hanging out, laughing, and working together during these practice sessions.  And, finally, after weeks, we were ready for the evening of the talent show.  I still remember us wearing black Spandex shorts and neon-colored t-shirts (it was the late 80’s after all).  And, I remember us standing on that stage: heads down, hearts beating fast, ready for the music to start, and the words….“Hit It.”  Although, I’m not sure that we obtained “Fly Girl” status that night, I am sure of this:  We had a fantastic time and created a wonderful memory.

So, here’s the thing:  It doesn’t matter if you’re 17 or 40-something.  When you’re moved by the music of life, don’t just sit there tapping your toes—get up!  Embrace your inner “Fly Girl” and set her free.  Life only happens once, and they’re playing your song.  Are you going to sit this one out or show-off your moves?  Hear the music; you know you want to……come on, let’s go!

Here’s a photo of a few of us from the talent show, excluding the Easter Bunny. 😉

  1. Keep on dancing!!

On a related note, I LOVE that movie. That scene where she’s coming out of the shower, he’s coming in from a jog, & they collide? “Why are you naked?!” “Why are you wet?!?” “WHY are you NAKED?!?!” “WHY ARE YOU WET?!?!” Honestly, brings me to tears every single time. 😂

  2. Fun story. Too bad videos were not as easy to produce as they are now. I’d LOVE to see that dance! Or … maybe you can show us in person sometime! You are absolutely right about music … it can definitely transport you back in time, and I can’t imagine going through life without it.
