A Starry Night by Vincent van Gogh (1889)
I just started reading the next selection for my book club called, Dark Enough to See the Stars in a Jamestown Sky, by Connie Lapollo. This book is based on the true story of the women and children at Jamestown. The following sublime quotes are found within the first pages of this book.
“When it is dark enough, you can see the stars.”
~Ralph Waldo Emerson
“Though they fell, they fell like stars,
Streaming splendour through the sky.”
~James Montgomery
As I read these quotes, I was reminded that we all face hardship at times; and, the thought occurred to me that even in some of our darkest hours, we often find grace.

That’s a profound observation, Tonya, and a beautiful one as well. Finding that grace is at the core of our humanity.

A Starry Night is hanging in the National Gallery of Art in DC…its the most wonderful place!!
Another historical book you might enjoy is The Invention of Wings by Sue Monk Kidd.. It’s about the Grimke sisters who were 2 of the first American feminist thinkers and abolition agents. It’s a great book…

Whew! This is so profound as Rob rightly said. In the shadows of the dark, the light indeed glows the brightest.

The stars are especially visible from our farm at night, since we live in the country away from bright lights. I can always see the Big Dipper over my barn on a clear night. 🙂

It gives us hope to think that when it is dark we can see the stars. I always love seeing all the stars when I am out in country too. 🙂

I agree with you. I love to take a blanket outside, lie down, and look up. It’s such a peaceful thing to do. 🙂

It is so amazing to see so many stars when the lights of the city aren’t blocking them.

You’re right! It really is something to see the night sky away from competing city lights—-so beautiful and serene.
