A Surprise and an Honor

I started my blog, Fourth Generation Farmgirl about 2 1/2 years ago.  It was the tenth anniversary of moving back to my ancestral home at Green Hill Farm.  Green Hill Farm: A Retrospective  Green Hill Farm includes the main house, a cottage, a big barn, pastures, and many outbuildings.  After some research at our local county courthouse and public library, Farmguy and I were fairly sure the two-story, solid brick house was built around 1790 and the cottage around 1775.  While we’re not certain of the age of the barn, old photographs taken in 1906 include it.  We know that five families lived in the main house before my great-grandparents, Eugene Rieley and Delia Crumpaker Rieley purchased it in the fall of 1912.  With our loving and timely restoration of the house in May 2004 (the cottage in 2011 and the barn in 2013), we became a chapter in this farm’s colorful story.  Green Hill Farm: A Retrospective – 2  I’m proud to say that Green Hill Farm has been in my family for 105 years, and hopefully, because of our hard work and love, it will now flourish for a long time to come. Green Hill Farm: A Retrospective – 3

I also started this blog as a reminder of the many blessings Green Hill Farm has given us.  To say that it hasn’t been easy would be a monumental understatement.  And, although living here has been challenging for various reasons, it has also taught me many lessons about my character and fortitude.  But mainly, it has taught me the meaning of grace.  No matter the ups or downs, Green Hill Farm is part of my heart, and I’m so happy and grateful to be able to share it with you.

So, you will understand how thrilled and honored I was last Friday when I received an email from Ben Huberman, one of the editors from WordPress Discover, informing me that I was an editor’s pick!  For those of you who may not be familiar with Discover, it’s a place where quality content on WordPress is collected for us to read.  According to their website, “millions of people use WordPress, from brand new bloggers to small magazines to major publications.  Discover highlights the work of this diverse and global community.”  Mr. Huberman shared that he had “enjoyed stumbling upon my blog and its fun and unorthodox mixture of writing on farming, travel, food, etc.,” and he went on to say that he thought other WordPress readers would also like it.  So, sometime soon, Fourth Generation Farmgirl will be appearing on Discover….and I’m just over the moon!!

  9. Congratulations. Well earned. You write about a farm life that seems like a dream for the world caught in a rat race. You bring back nostalgia for the simple things of life, for nature, animals, and the smell and feel of mother earth.
