Tuesday Tunes

The Tuesday Tune for today’s post is one of my favorite hymns.  “For the Beauty of the Earth” is a Christian hymn by Folliott S. Pierpoint, M.A. (1835-1917).  Folliott was born at Spa Villa in Bath, England and was educated at Queen’s College, Cambridge, graduating in classical honours in 1871.  “For the Beauty of the Earth” was first published as The Sacrifice of Praise in 1864.

My special memory of this hymn is singing it at Echo Lake in Augusta, Maine, where Farmguy’s family has spent summers for five generations.  Every Sunday during the summer, there is a “sing.”  And, all of the neighboring families, many of whom have been spending summers in Maine as long as Farmguy’s family, take turns hosting one of these campfire gatherings.  Everyone brings his or her hymnals and favorite campfire songs along with sandwiches and a thermos of coffee, we make s’mores by the fire, and sing together for a couple of hours.  It is a wonderful tradition, and I have fond memories of spending time with Farmguy’s grandparents there. I remember Farmguy’s grandmother once sharing that this hymn was her mother’s favorite.  It is truly one of the loveliest and most moving hymns.  I hope you will take a moment to listen to these stirring lyrics by Folliott S. Pierpoint and the beautiful voices of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. Enjoy!

**Special note:  Our good friend and artist, Donna Tuten painted these beautiful scenes of Farmguy’s family’s camp in Maine.  Also, sadly, Farmguy’s grandfather passed away in February of this year.  He would have been 103 yesterday.

  1. What beautiful memories to have this wonderful hymn encapsulated in! I am heading to Maine on Sunday for a few days with my husband … I am beyond excited having never been before. If I can fit it in I will go and find Echo Lake and sing to myself (quietly because I am NO singer!)

  2. This is one of my favourite hymns Tonya! What wonderful memories and traditions you and Farm guy have together and with your families. What a wonderful age Farmguy’s Granddad lived to and how sad for everyone that they lost him. 😦

  3. That is a beautiful hymn, mmhm. I know it well. “Grateful praise” indeed. Funny thing about me, I’m not churchy but I love hymns. Love them. Without fail I sing and hum hymns and lullabies while I clean.
The paintings are lovely. How fortunate to have a painter friend 🙂

    • The thing is…beautiful music is beautiful music. 🙂

Our friend painted those pics of camp for Farmguy’s grandfather’s 100th birthday a few years ago. She’s the same friend who encouraged me to take art classes. Donna’s a gem. Thanks so much, Joey. 🙂
