Friday Farm Favorites
I thought I would share some images and a few simple joys that were highlights of my week.
I love spring bulbs, especially hyacinths as they remind me of Grandma Rieley. When I was a child, Grandma had a bulb garden full of hyacinths at the side of the house (where we live now). I’ve always adored the fragrant smell of these flowers–just like perfume. Sometimes, as a child, I would sneak and pick a couple of Grandma’s beloved blooms. I still remember getting into trouble for flower picking without permission. Anyway, these spring bulbs and the special memories accompanying them add a little warmth and brightness to a dull winter day.
There’s nothing better than reading a book and sharing a snuggle with Clementine Kitty or spending time with Dash and Maud while watching a film on a rainy, cold evening.
It’s such a treat and a joy to interact with our chickens. I love how they cluck and chirp as soon as they catch sight of me in the mornings. One of my favorite things each day is giving the hens their scratch and collecting eggs. It’s always a surprise! I never know how many eggs or what color to expect. It’s like receiving a special gift. I carefully carry the eggs back to the house to clean them, taking care not to break any of the fragile treasures. Once they’re cleaned and dried, I lovingly place them in the egg dish according to color and aesthetic. Farmguy likes to give me a hard time for my little color-coordinating routine. But, I don’t care. I like them to look pretty. And, it makes me happy.
It’s never a “baaaad” day on Green Hill Farm when I get to visit with my favorite pair of woollies–Clover and Hamish. Of course, they are waiting for grain. 😉
Here’s wishing you a wonderful weekend from all of us at Green Hill Farm!

Charming! Yet another year has passed here, and still I haven’t planted early bulbs. And I do miss them. My neighbor has a few and I wander over to see if they’re up, but I won’t pick em 😉
I would imagine collecting the eggs, washing them, and then putting them in the egg dish is a kind of zen. I think I’d enjoy that. And of course it should look pretty. Admiring the beauty of eggs is another way to express gratitude.
Lovely post — enjoy your weekend 🙂

Thank you so much, Joey. I really appreciate your kind and thoughtful comment! The spring bulb thing kind of sneaks up on me, too. When it’s cold outside, my mind isn’t always thinking about spring flowers. 🙂
My egg-collecting routine could be described as a kind of zen. That’s a good way of seeing it. 🙂 Even though it may be cold and windy some days when I go to the chicken coop, I always try to feel grateful for the eggs and the effort and energy from the hens to lay them. It amazes me how different the eggs look from one day to the next: some are big, tiny, oval, round, speckled, etc. I remember reading that it takes a hen approximately 25 hours to form and produce an egg. And, an egg is considered to be a perfect food, containing every vitamin and mineral except for vitamin C. All that, and they’re beautiful, too–pretty miraculous. 😉
Have a great weekend!

That’s so kind, Jim! Thank you. 🙂
I know you’re going to fuss at me. 😉 I remember discussing the century farm application with you this time last year, and it completely slipped my mind. It’s going right to the top of my “To do” list. Thanks for the reminder! 🙂

Really enjoyed your blog today. My Grandmother also kept beautiful flowers in her gardens. Her ability and dedication to tend them were amazing as she suffered with severe rheumatoid arthritis.
Tonya, I also want to convey how much Laura and I appreciate you and Scott for thinking of us during her Mother’s final days here on earth. Your kindness, thoughtfulness, and generosity is just as I remember. Take care and know that you are a wonderful person doing wonderful things that truly matter.

Doug, I was so touched by your kind comment. I can only imagine the difficult time you, Laura, and your family have faced, and I’m thankful that our gesture gave you all some small measure of comfort. Thank you, again, for your encouraging and generous comments. I appreciate your and Laura’s friendship. 🙂

Yes, arranging the eggs is one of my funny quirks. I do it when I place them in the carton as well. 😉

I’m grateful to have something to do, something and someone to love, and something to look forward to daily. Green Hill Farm is truly a blessing. Although a bit of stress figures in periodically due to the responsibility of taking care of our farm and animals, this life often affords wonderful lessons and moments of grace for which I am thankful.
