The Weekly Bleat: Maud Update #3
I would like to express my thanks to everyone who has been so kind to ask about Maud. I really appreciate your interest and concern regarding her progress. Maud has been steadily making gains over the last few weeks. She hasn’t felt wonderful, partially due to her illness as well as the steroids, but she is better. She visited the vet twice since the last update, and each time, we’ve gotten good news. Maud’s platelet and red blood cell (RBC) counts continue to climb, and she’s staying healthy despite her compromised immune system. Since the platelet and RBC counts rose, our vet instructed us to start reducing (just a little) the amount of prednisone Maud receives daily. This is Maud’s first week of steroid reduction, and we visit our vet on Monday, 21st September to recheck her blood work. Our hope is that Maud’s platelet and RBC counts will continue to climb.
Because of Maud’s increased RBC count, we’ve noticed that her gums are getting pinker as are the pink parts of her droopy, hound dog eyes. She’s not lying around as much and appears more energetic as she’s got a little more pep in her step and has begun “exploring” the garden again. I also know she’s feeling better, because I hear myself once again, saying, “Maud, stop eating THAT….it’s yucky!” Or, I’ll lament, “Maud, you’re hurting my ears.”
The difference this time….. her little, quirky behaviors don’t annoy me anymore. I feel so happy that she’s feeling well enough to walk around eating “yucky” stuff and howling her sweet head off, and it moves me to think how an animal like Maud can teach me patience, acceptance, unconditional love, and gratitude.
Thank you all so much for your encouragement and support, but mostly, thank you for your loving thoughts and prayers for Maud. XOXO

That’s exactly what my heart is hoping for, too. The next visit is really important to gauge Maud’s recovery. You’re right; pets are definitely family. 🙂

Glad to hear Maud is better and doing “dog” things… They really do eat yucky stuff sometimes 😀.

Thanks so much, Melody. Yes, Maud has a knack for finding “yucky” stuff, but I don’t mind. 😉

Good to hear, give her a hug for me.
I’ve always been amazed at how dogs give love, regardless of how they’ve been treated. We’ve always rescued our huskies, and no matter how bad their previous life was they always warm up quickly. You can tell that they’ve accepted you when you can pet them while they’re eating.

Thank you for allowing us to be a part of Maud’s healing process! I totally understand what you mean about the patience and the unconditional love we learn from our pets, especially as they grow older. I’m glad it’s been good news, and I’ll continue to keep your family in my thoughts.

Lovely picture of you and Maud. So happy she is continually improving, and that she is back to eating yucky food, and howling. I am sure the love and care she has been given by you and Scott has greatly helped her on road to recovery 🙂

A little TLC (and alot of medication) goes a long way, huh? LOL. Most relieved to hear of so many improvements…..crossing fingers that the meds can be reduced and the improvements pick up speed!
